Abstract

A group of short stories produced by female writers reveals that fundamental principles of democracy, of equality, freedom, and human dignity, are not truly carried out in practice particularly in the relationship between women and men. These female group of writers employ literary works in order to expose the problem of inequality which lies in power-related relationships between women and men, both in domestic and public spheres. Through issues on abortion and prostitution, these female writers also reveal the ideology of patriarchy which controls people's mentality. Moreover, this group of short stories also raises the collective feminine consciousness among women through experiences that are problematic. The stories portray women reciprocally forming a close relationships in the private and public sphere, realizing and understanding the status that their own status and, that of their peers that are still inferior, reserlting in a call for social equality.
