Abstract

Mateo Falcone, written by Prosper Mérimée, a French author of the 19th century, is considered as one of the French short story masterpieces, thanks to its traditional form and narrative structure. In our analysis, Mérimée used narrative structure of contracts composing negotiations and relations between characters. The dilemma of conflicts consequently provoked a tragic end to the situation. Mérimée showed his writing skill by using a place dimension to conflicts of social values and cultures between urban and rural societies in Corsica.
