Representation of Prisoners from documentaries of Chavoret Jaruboon

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to study the methods of representing the prisoners from documentaries of Chavoret Jaruboon and to understand the representation of prisoners that appeared in documentary writings that were created through discourse creation. The study was carried out through the analysis of a documentary entitled “Bunthuk Daenprahan Khuk Bang Kwang” (Record ... Land of execution, Bang Kwang prison) using the framework of language strategies and representation. The study found that Chavoret Jaruboon's documentary writing works created the representation of prisoners through two language strategies: lexicalization and discourse pragmatic strategies. Such language strategies created visual representations for prisoners in three different ways: representations of dangerous persons, representation of a person with a mental disorder, and representations of people that society does not want, which eventually led to the creation of identity for prisoners.
