Speakers may employ different linguistic politeness strategies that depend on the type of relationship they have with their listeners and the severity of threat to face. The objectives of this study were to: 1) investigate linguistic politeness strategies of refusal to elderly people’s requests, and 2) analyze the frequency of linguistic politeness strategies from three different types of relationship. The data were collected from a sample of 72 by using the Think-Aloud Protocol (TAP) questionnaire as the interview instrument. For the data analysis, Brown and Levinson's politeness strategies model was employed to analyze the linguistic politeness strategies. The results showed that teenagers employed six super-strategies; namely 1) Using honorific words, 2) Mitigating intentions, 3) Giving reasons, 4) Proposing solutions, 5) Focusing on listeners’ feelings, and 6) Teasing or joking. It was also found that the type of relationships influenced the selection of linguistic politeness strategies. Most teenagers employed “proposing solutions” strategies to their family members whereas “using honorific words” was employed to neighbors and acquaintances, respectively.</p> ER -
