Application of Sangaha Vatthu Principles in Community Development of Administrative Monks in Area of Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province

Abstract

              This thesis had the following objectives; 1) to study the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province, 2) to compare the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province based on their age, year in monkhood, duration of the Rain Retreat, and educational background, and 3) to study a guideline in the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province. The samples were 271 monks. The data were collected from September 2017 to April 2018 through questionnaires and interviews and then analyzed by Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation (SD), F-test (One-Way ANOVA) and LSD (Least Significant Difference).
            The research results found that:
            1) The monks’ opinion on the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province was at a moderate level overall. In details, the highest level was on Charity, followed by Useful Conduct, Kindly Speech, and Even and Equal Treatment respectively.
            2) Comparison results, the monks’ opinion on the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province was Indifferent totally rejecting the study hypothesis. The monks with different years in monkhood and durations of the Rain Retreat had different levels of opinion on Kindly Speech and Useful Conduct. The monks having different educational backgrounds had different levels of opinion on Kindly Speech and Useful Conduct with statistically significant figure at 0.05.
            3) The results of interviews, the monks viewed that the application of the 4 principles of Sangaha Vatthu in community development of administrative monks in Mueang district of Chiang Rai province was in accordance with 6 aspects of the Sangha Affairs. In Charity, giving knowledge in community development was focused. In In Kindly Speech, the administrative monks emphasized the understanding of people in community development. In Useful Conduct, development of public utility, vocation, education and mind were emphasized. In Even and Equal Treatment, the administrative monks remained neutral in solving community problems and in setting guidelines in community development.
