Abstract
This paper traces historical background and the position of “ethotheatre” in methodological contexts of theatre arts and social sciences. It discusses the development of modern theatre and its social engagement, with special emphasis on its educational and emancipatory potential. Furthermore, it also suggests that ethnotheatre can contribute to make social research more comprehensible to the public as well as to challenge epistemological boundaries within social sciences. By emphasizing the lifelikeness and capability to bring about live experience to its audience, ethnotheatre therefore could offer a distinctive form of representation of social life from other genres of performance.
