The research of old town boundary identification of Chachoengsao aimed to identify the old town boundary by studying the elements of Chachoengsao old town and analysing its potential to generate the draft of old town boundary identification according to the regularity of Krung Rattanakosin and old town defined by the office of the prime minister. Thereafter, the draft of boundary was brought into the public hearing, consisting of all ranges of stakeholders, to collect recommendations and improvements for a decent boundary identification - covering all urban elements in a proper scale that should be agreed by all stakeholders - which was carried out based on the generated Geographic Information System (GIS) from the database of Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning. Finally, the agreed draft of old town boundary was proposed to the subcommittee of consideration and approval for the action plan of conservation and development in Krung Rattanakosin and old town before submitting to the cabinet for the approval of Chachoengsao old town boundary identification.
The study of Chachoengsao old town elements and the value assessment of natural and cultural heritage presented the following old town elements; (1) 3 sites of natural heritage; (2) 24 sites of cultural heritage, consisting of 1 city fort and wall, 9 Buddhist monasteries, 3 shrines, 1 monument and 10 sites of architectural heritage. These old town elements were assessed in terms of the site potential, which presented 2 sites of low potential, 19 sites of middle potential and 6 sites of high potential.
Following this study, Chachoengsao old town boundary occupies 3.96 square kilometres; meanwhile, the buffer zone occupies 2.73 square kilometres. The old town identification was proceeded to the cabinet for the approval of old town boundary identification, yielding guidelines for Chachoengsao old town sustainable conservation and development onwards.
