Abstract

Although many Thai Vernacular houses, particularly in the central region of Thailand, were originally arranged in compact groupings along the watercourses, modern developments have changed the living habits of the residents, thus changing the characteristics of their dwellings. The aim of this paperisto illustrate morphological changes of Thai vernacular compounds. Material for discussion was derived from observations and interviews with eighty households from eight out of fourteen villages in Tambon Pakkran of Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The data obtained were analyzed using various analytical approaches and tools. The most important finding is that although the physical appearance of the housing compounds has changed they still retain the traditional spatial configuration.
