Abstract

Spatial system of Bangkok has long been the subject of several urban studies. These studies are carried out by various analytical techniques and disciplines, and the ways in which they are related to the spatial system of Bangkok involved with two common themes: the spatial system of the canal network, which was the original spatial network in Bangkok, and the spatial system of the road network. Recently another analytical technique becomes popular to study the spatial system of Bangkok; that is of Space Syntax (Hillier and Hanson, 1984).

Using Space Syntax as an analytical tool, a series of studies was carried out in order to established: in what way the spatial structure of the road network of Bangkok has changed as the city grew; whether the changes have made the spatial system of the Bangkok road network to be similar or different to those of other cities; in what ways spatial structures of local areas of Bangkok have changed, particularly those of the historic local areas which had been originated by the canal network that was replaced by the road network; whether spatial structures of local areas of Bangkok are different from one another; and, if so, whether there are systematic relationships between spatial differences and functional types of areas. This paper is a report of two main results: changes in spatial structure of the road network of Bangkok and changes in spatial structures of local areas of Bangkok from canal-oriented to road-oriented.

The findings indicate that despite the influence of the canal network, overall, the spatial system of the road network of Bangkok is more similar to those of other cities. However, when the city grew, there are two spatial characteristics, which make the spatial system of the Bangkok road network most distinguished compared with those of other cities. As for changes in spatial structures of local areas, the emphasis on road-oriented has made the historic local areas be more segregated to the structure of the city as a whole.
