Abstract
BRIEF SUMMARY REPORT ON THE STUDY FOR REDEVELOPMENT OF TEMPLES IN THE NORTH-EAST

This study was commissioned by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in the 1987 fiscal year. The purpose of the study was to identify the problems associated with the physical aspects of planning and spatial organization relating to uses and activities that take place on temple grounds. Proposals were then made as guidelines for redevelopment based on 3 case-studies so that the public and Visitors may be properly catered for.
Research was carried out in 2 phases. The first was to study related documents in order to get an overall impression of the north-eastern region before systematically identifying a number of Buddhist temples of which surveys are to be carried out. The second phase involved field studies and surveys of those temples which have previously been identified. Records were then taken and descriptions from surveys made. From the surveys, 3 examples were then chosen as case studies with each one representing different planning attributes.
From the 3 case studies, proposals were then attempted and recommendations made as guidelines for redevelopment with respect to 3 important aspects: (I) spatial redefinition to suit religions community activities that take place on temple grounds; (II) caring for buildings of important artistic, architectonic, historic values which may be affected by careless development or lack of attention ; (III) provision of outdoor facilities, furnitures and appropriate pavings to cater to the public and visitors that may come in tour groups.
Implementation of the proposals was recommended to be carried
out in 4 phases :
(I) Survey of existing conditions of the grounds in detail.
(II) Compare survey findings and problems identified with the Case studies in the report.
(III) Prepare working schedule with consideration for Social and economic possibility.
(IV) Implement in aspects of top priorities first in order to suit budget.
