Abstract
THE CONSERVATION OF ANCIENT CITIES AND ANCIENT SETTLEMENTS IN THAILAND : A COUNTRY REPORT
By Sunon Palakavong Na Ayudhya
A country report presented during “The SPAFA Consultative Workshop on Conservation of Ancient Cities and/or Settlements” in Indonesia during 21st June-28th June 1987.
The report begins with an analysis of the modern principles of conservation and reveals the aim of the report. The development of the concept of the “Conservation Area” in Europe and Asia is also discussed in general. Then the emphasis is placed upon the “Conservation Area” in Thailand through the examination of the Thai Conservation Act of 1961 and the Thai Architectural Conservation Charter of 1984.
The report goes on to discuss the term “Historical Park” and gives the meaning in the Thai sense and followed by revealing the number of ancient cities and settlements being found in Thailand.
The report then observes the official administration of the conservation works in Thailand and gives the names of the 9 Historial Park Projects being carried out in various parts of Thailand.
The Conservation in Sukhothai is discussed in greater details together with brief informations on the Historical Park Projects at Ayudhya, Phanom Rung, Sri Sachanalai, Muang Singh, Pimai, Kampangpetch, Srithep and Pranakorn Kiri
An evaluation of the conservation works in Thailand is then attempted, starting with identifying the problems on the aspects of administration, finance, personnel, sociology and technique through to the proposals recommended as solutions to those problems.
The conclusion points out that the conservation of a city is an inter-disciplinary work. And although in Thailand the concept of conservation is still much in debate, the problems and methodology also have yet to be fully understood.
