ยูโทเปีย

Abstract

        ตามความเข้าใจของคนส่วนใหญ่ในปัจจุบัน “ยูโทเปีย” หมายถึง รูปแบบสังคมอุดมคติซึ่งแตกต่างจากรูปแบบสังคมที่เป็นอยู่อย่างสุดโต่ง ความเข้าใจดังกล่าวนำไปสู่นัยยะในเชิงลบ ซึ่งได้แก่ ความเป็นไปไม่ได้ และความฝัน เฟื่องไร้สาระ อคติที่ว่านี้เป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญที่สังคมใช้โจมตี ปิดกั้น ความคิดใหม่ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นมาท้าทายความคิดเดิมๆ อย่างไรก็ตาม ข้อมูลในประวัติศาสตร์ บ่งชี้ว่า ยูโทเปียมิได้มีนัยยะแบนราบตายตัวอย่างที่เข้าใจกันในสมัยนี้ และไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นรูปแบบสังคมที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ด้วย ที่สำคัญ มโนคติในยูโทเปีย ส่งอิทธิพลเป็นอย่างสูงต่อการจัดระเบียบสังคมมนุษย์ตลอดมา บทความนี้เสนอการสำรวจตรวจสอบความคิดยูโทเปียซึ่งมีปรากฏนับแต่เมื่อหลายพันปีก่อน ครอบคลุมเนื้อหาความเป็นมา ความหลากหลาย ความเปลี่ยนแปลงและความหมายต่อสังคมในแต่ละยุคสมัย โดยให้ความสำคัญเป็นพิเศษกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความคิดยูโทเปียกับความคิดในการวางผัง การสำรวจตรวจลึกเข้าไปในมโนทัศน์แบบยูโทเปียอาจเป็นหนทางหนึ่งที่ช่วยเปิดประตูความคิดให้กับวงการผังเมืองซึ่งเฝ้าแสวงหาคำตอบตลอดมาว่ารูปแบบการตั้งถิ่นฐานที่ดีที่สุดคืออะไร

Utopia

        In the present-day popular understanding, utopia means an ideal society with which everything in it is in contradiction with those in our contemporary society. The meaning of the term implies negative bias towards impracticality, romanticism and even impossibility. The bias becomes a popular social instrument widely used to criticise, marginalise or impede new ideas which at times come forth to challenge the dominant view. However, history reveals that utopian concepts have been neither static nor shallow as perceived by current general public. Neither are they necessary impracticable. Past experiences show that, indeed, ideas in utopia have greatly infl uenced the social organisation of human throughout the history. The paper examines utopian concepts which have appeared since thousands of years ago. It outlines the diverse notions of utopia, their emergences, their changes and their signifi cances to the society in particular times. A keen attention is given to the relationship between utopian ideas and urban planning practices. The paper suggests that an insight into utopian concepts would be a key to which planning could settle down its long quest for the optimum of human settlements.
