Abstract

The development of border trade areas is a delicate matter since each area has different situational contexts. Studying the current situation and the needs of the people in the area is, therefore, important. This research aims to study the current situation and the needs of the people for the development of the Taba market area in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province. This is a qualitative research study conducted by observing the environmental context of the Taba market and conducting in-depth interviews with two groups of key informants, consisting of 12 individuals selected by using a purposive sampling method. The sample includes two leaders and ten members of the public who reside in the Taba market area. The data analysis is performed using thematic analysis. As for the findings, they reveal that: (1) economically, there is a lack of support for the people, as they need capital, job creation, and a safety net; (2) socially, the current development is in accordance with the situational and cultural contexts of the people, though more development plan details are needed; (3) on infrastructure, it does offer comfort, yet it still lacks public toilets, which are urgently needed; and (4) in terms of spatial management, individuals who are close to the leaders can participate in sharing opinions, and the people need spaces for voicing their opinions. In fact, security is currently unpredictable, so the people need security agents in charge to look after the area. This research suggests making public relations efforts and creating understanding with the people in the area, including offering opportunities for opinion expression through a variety of channels as conveniently as possible.
