Abstract

This article aimed to study the success of the strategies of the people as Rak Ton Sator group applied oppose the construction plan of Ban Muang Takua Dam Project affected community in Nong Thong Sub-district, Pa Bon District, Phatthalung Province. The research methods based on qualitative data upon primary and secondary sources as well as a review of the literature review, non-participative observation, including in-depth interviews with Rak Ton Sator group and government officials. Result indicated effectiveness of diverse and innovation tactics in name of Rak Ton Sator group movement through mainstream tactics such as lobbying and nonviolent mobilization tactics, including rallies, sit ins and civil disobedience. The success of social movements like the Rak Ton Sator group included grievances and few internal resources appearing in movement. The success of the opposing movement stems from a strong social, cultural and community foundation including confidence in the villagers’ potential and environmental balance. Creating community participations and the use of diverse tactics to oppose the project may be applied as a model for other area affected by other large-scale projects of the government.
