Abstract

This research aims to study the relationship between Ayutthaya and Lan Xang during 1350-1767 and the background of their relationship. There are two aspects of the relationship between Ayutthaya and Lan Xang : politics and trading. Their political relation was obvious during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat of Ayutthaya and King Chaiyachetthathirat of Lan Xang. They signed a treaty of alliance in order to confront the growing power of Burma under the lead of King Bayinnaung. The relationship between the two kingdoms after this period was a kind of supporting ally when Lan Xang asked for Ayutthaya’s aid to solve the succession disputes. Since Ayutthaya was an international trading port in Southeast Asia, Ayutthaya played an important role as Lan Xang’s trade post. The particularly for importance was forest products, which were in high demand in China. Moreover, traders from Lan Xang purchased a lot of foreign products from Ayutthaya in order to distribute those products to the inland markets.
