This article aimed to analyze the surnames of the Thai people of Karen lineage on the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak province in terms of meanings, cultural values and characteristics. The data comprised 107 surnames of students in the Faculty of Education, Naresuan University from the academic years 2013-2018. These students belong to the project titled “Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Royal Initiatives for Undergraduate Educational Management for the Development of Teachers in Remote Highlands on the Thai-Myanmar Border in Tak Province.” The results revealed that the surnames could be grouped into 17 categories of meanings, of which the three most frequently found were (1) nature, (2) prosperity, stability and fertility, and (3) family lineage, The least frequently found were the last names related to superstitions, cultural values and characteristics of the Thai people of Karen lineage. These findings reveal that the Thai people of Karen lineage are attached to nature and value the natural resources of the forests, mountains, rivers and streams, as well as their common family lineage. In addition, the analysis indicated cultural changes from simple ways of life in natural environments to ways of living directed by the desire for prosperity and financial success as a result of contact with urban societies. These values regarding materialistic achievements, therefore, were perceived as necessary for enhancing the quality of life.
