Abstract

Ayutthaya was a cosmopolitan society, with several ethnic ground and several professions. One vocation was that of missionary. Roman Catholic missionaries first came to Ayutthaya in the reign of King Ramathibodi II (1491-1529). They lived and worked there right up till the final defeat and destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. Even though priests of different orders came to this city, there appeared to be no signs of conflict between them until the entry onto the scene of the French Société des Missions Etrangères. The arrival of these missionaries caused friction with the Roman Catholic priests who had come here earlier. These conflicts had an effect both on the work of the Missions Etrangres priests and on the way of life of Roman Catholics in Ayutthayan society.
