Phra Aphai Mani

Abstract

Phra Aphai Mani, the verse narrative written by Sunthorn Phu, has always been an outstanding and popular piece of literature because this literary work provides amusement and morality to the readers, “The Birth of Sudsakorn” and “Sudsakorn arrives at Karavek” are the two chapters that are studied at elementary level, while “Phra Aphai Mani Flees from Phi Suea Samut (sea ogress)” is included in the high school curriculum, “The Birth of Sudsakorn” and “Sudsakorn arrives at Karavek” are appropriate for young readers because they narrate the adventures of the character who is a child. There are also many non-human beings or supernatural characters and a fantasy theme. “Phra Aphai Mani flees from Phi Suea Samut (sea ogress)" presents many exciting events and the powerful love between husband and wife, and also father and son. The distinction of content, concept, characterization and beautiful style of verses of these three chapters will arouse the young readers to follow the rest of the book. This article is intended to expand the knowledge of the teachers who teach Thai literature, and also to confirm to the readers that Phra Aphai Mani is an extremely valuable piece of national literary heritage.
