Saddharmapuņdarīkasūtra : The Dharma Aims at Buddhayana

Abstract

This article aims at studying the main theme of the Saddharmapundrīkasūtra. It is found from the study that the text presents the best way to attain enlightenment. It is the Buddhayana which is the only way. The text also points out that the Buddha's teaching of Triyāna or three vehicles, namely the Srāvakayāna, Pratyekabuddhayāna and Bhodhisattvayāna is merely a skillful means (upāyakausalya) applied by the Buddha in preparing all beings for a higher vehicle, that is Buddhayana. The Saddharmapundarīkasūtra points out further that every individual has the potential to become a Buddha by accumulating merits gradually according to his ability.
