ห้องสมุดสีเขียว: หนทางในการสร้างความตระหนักในการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม

ในศตวรรษที่ 21 ปัญหาของสิ่งแวดล้อม ได้ถูกหยิบยกขึ้นมาศึกษาอย่างกว้างขวาง เนื่องจากเกิดวิกฤตการณ์ทางธรรมชาติทั่วโลก อาทิ การเกิดภาวะโลกร้อน ภัยแล้ง อุทกภัย และวาตภัย สาเหตุสำคัญมาจากการบริโภคทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่ไม่สอดคล้องกับระบบนิเวศ หนทางการแก้ไขปัญหาจึงต้องสร้างความตระหนักรู้เกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อมแก่ประชาชนโดยตรง แนวคิดห้องสมุดสีเขียว (Green Library) เกิดขึ้นมาเพื่อสนับสนุนแนวทางการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนของสหประชาชาติและพันธกิจของสถาบันการศึกษา โดยทำหน้าที่ในการสร้างความตระหนักในการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมที่สนับสนุนกระบวนการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตใน 2 รูปแบบ คือ 1) การเป็นรูปลักษณ์ของสิ่งปลูกสร้างที่อนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม ที่เป็นแบบอย่างให้ประชาชนได้เรียนรู้ วิธีคิดและการดำเนินการเพื่อนำไปปรับใช้ และ 2) การเป็นคลังความรู้กระตุ้นให้เกิดนิเวศสำนึกเกี่ยวกับความตระหนักรู้เรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยใช้หลักการปฏิบัติ 3 E ได้แก่ การเสริมพลังในการเรียนรู้ (Empower) การสร้างการมีส่วนร่วมในการเรียนรู้ (Engage) การกระตุ้นให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ (Energize)
