บทความนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาความคิดของนักคิดชาวฝรั่งเศส ฌ็อง โบแด็ง ในเรื่องอำนาจอธิปไตยและอำนาจการจัดเก็บภาษี ด้วยวิธีการศึกษาในบริบทสังคม เศรษฐกิจ ภูมิปัญญา และการเมือง รวมถึงข้อเขียนที่สำคัญของโบแด็ง อิทธิพลทางความคิดของเขาได้มีส่วนสำคัญต่อการก่อกำเนิดแนวคิดว่าด้วยรัฐสมัยใหม่ขึ้นมา โดยเฉพาะแนวคิดว่าอำนาจอธิปไตย และเป็นส่วนสำคัญในกระแสธารของการถกเถียงทางความคิดเกี่ยวกับเรื่องอำนาจอธิปไตย รวมถึงแนวคิดเรื่องขันติธรรมทางศาสนา และแนวคิดเรื่องการจัดเก็บภาษีขององค์กษัตริย์ต้องได้รับการยินยอมจากประชาชนผ่านสภาก็มีอิทธิพลต่อนักคิดในยุคถัดมา
