อิสรภาพจากมุมมองของนักจิตเวชศาสตร์ยุคหลังในการปลดปล่อยผู้ป่วยจิตเวชจากการกักขังในสถาบันเบ็ดเสร็จ

การรักษาผู้ป่วยจิตเวชในโรงพยาบาลจิตเวชตามที่เออวิง กอฟฟแมน (Erving Goffman)เรียกว่าสถาบันเบ็ดเสร็จนั้นมีอิทธิพลต่อจิตเวชศาสตร์ยุคสมัยใหม่ช่วงก่อนปีค.ศ.1970 อย่างมาก ทว่าหลังจากนั้น จิตเวชศาสตร์ยุคสมัยใหม่ถูกท้าทายโดยจิตแพทย์จิตเวชศาสตร์ยุคหลัง อันนำไปสู่การปฏิรูปจิตเวชศาสตร์ครั้งสำคัญขึ้นทั่วยุโรปตะวันตก อเมริกาหรือแม้แต่อดีตประเทศฝ่ายซ้าย ซึ่งการปฏิรูปครั้งนี้ถือเป็นการปลดปล่อยผู้ป่วยจิตเวชออกจากระบบจิตเวชศาสตร์ที่ละเลยคุณค่าของความเป็นมนุษย์ บทความชิ้นนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าความคิดเรื่องอิสรภาพนั้นไม่ได้ถูกกล่าวถึงโดยมิเชล ฟูโกต์(Michael Foucault) หรือนักจิตเวชศาสตร์ฝ่ายขวาผู้มีชื่อเสียงอย่างโทมัส ซาสซ์(Thomas Szasz)เท่านั้น แต่ยังถูกกล่าวถึงโดยฟรองโก บาซะเกลีย(Franco Basaglia) และอาร์ ดี เลียง(R.D. Laing)นักจิตเวชศาสตร์ฝ่ายซ้ายจากอิตาลีและสก็อตแลนด์อีกด้วย นั่นแสดงให้เห็นว่าแนวคิดเสรีนิยมของฝ่ายขวาไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแนวคิดเดียวที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงความคิดทางจิตเวชศาสตร์เช่นในปัจจุบัน
