Thailand Symbolic Meaning Construction of Chu Chok’s Characteristics in Mahajati Vessantara Jataka Lanna Issue

          The qualitative research paper aims to investigate (1) the symbolic meaning construction of Chu Chok’s characteristics (2) the process of otherness to Chu Chok in Mahajati Vessantara Jataka Lanna Issue. Three Mahajati Vessantara Jataka Lanna Issues are studied. The first version is named Soi Sang Kara. It was edited by PhraUpalikunupamajara (Fu Attacheevo). The second one is called Mai Phai Chae Ria Dang, edited by Prof. Dr. Udom Runreunsri  and the last issue is Kutikham version, edited by Phrakruadulsrilakitti. Semiology and otherness theory are used to study in this research and descriptive method is applied to demonstrate all result of the study.

          From the study of all of three issues, it shows three symbolic meaning of Chu Chok’s characteristics; the first aspect is Chu Chok’s character, the second is Chu Chok’s behaviors presented in the issue and the third one is the meaning of words or author’s perspective expressed throughout the issues. These factors construct symbolic meaning to Chu Chok in Mahajati Vessantara Jataka.

          In terms of the study of the otherness of Chu Chok, it indicates that the otherness is transferred to Chu Chok through human perspective, race and Brahman cast. This process is produced repeatedly to reflect belief and this continues to grow through Mahajati Vessantara Jataka till the present time.
