The King’s Philosophy implemented in “A Child of the Northeast”

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine The King's Philosophy implemented in a Thai novel, A Child of the Northeast, written by Kampoon Boontawee. The three aspects of the King's philosophy: soil resource management, water resource management, and forest resource management, were analyzed through the settings, characters, dialogues, and scene descriptions of the novel. This study was qualitative, and the results were presented in a descriptive-analytic manner.

The study found that the novel, A Child of the Northeast by Kampoon Boontawee implemented the three aspects of the King's philosophy. In terms of soil resource management, the problem-oriented approach was identified. Due to the drought of the land, the characters were portrayed with patience and endurance against life problems. Moreover, utility-based resource management was introduced through the use of soil in daily life and agriculture. As for water resource management, water scarcity for consumption incorporated with water conservation practices represented the use of a problem-oriented approach.  In addition, fisheries in the novel exemplified utility-based resource management.

As regards forest resource management, utility-based resource management was represented by the daily use of forests. The novel, A Child of the Northeast by Kampoon Boontawee, consequently conveyed the content that aimed to educate, entertain, and implicate the King's philosophy so that the audience could eventually put the royal thoughts into the ultimate practice.
