Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to 1) study the living conditions of older adults in relation to self-reliance and the creation of value for society under the new normal way of life; 2) study the potential of older adults in working, creating occupations, and generating income; 3) develop a model for enhancing the potential of older adults to empower self-reliance and create value for society; and 4) implement and evaluate the model. The research employed a research and development approach, using qualitative research methods as the main approach together with a survey. The target group consisted of older adults from three elderly clubs in Phetchaburi Province, with 20 participants from each club, totaling 60 participants. The research instruments included a survey form, an in-depth interview form, a model appropriateness assessment form, and an observation record form. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, while survey data were analyzed using frequency and percentage. The results showed that 1) most older adults were able to take care of themselves, participate in family and community activities, and continue working to earn income; however, some had limitations in vision, hearing, occupational returns, and digital skills; 2) the older adults had knowledge, experience, and readiness to learn additional occupations, with each area selecting occupations that were consistent with community resources; 3) the developed model consisted of six steps: studying living conditions, studying potential, jointly thinking and deciding on occupational choices, developing knowledge and skills, planning work activities, and actual implementation according to the plan; and 4) the results of the model implementation showed that the older adults were able to form groups, divide roles, develop skills, mobilize funds, produce goods, and begin selling products in practice. However, production and income were still at an initial stage, and follow-up should be conducted in the long-term regarding group continuity, income, and the use of benefits to assist society.
