งานศึกษานำเสนอข้อมูลชั้นต้นและบทวิเคราะห์ ว่าด้วยความเป็นไปแห่งบรรพชนตระกูลอาซึ่งสืบทอดตำแหน่งเจ้าเมืองเติ้งชวน แคว้นต้าหลี่ มณฑลยูนนาน เริ่มตั้งแต่ในปฐมรัชกาลแห่งราชวงศ์หมิง เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1382 กระทั่งสิ้นสุดระบบเจ้าเมืองสืบทายาทลงในรัชสมัยพระจักรพรรดิ์หย่งเจิ้งแห่งราชวงศ์ชิง เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1728 ข้อมูลชั้นต้นประกอบด้วยจารึกขนาดยาวแสดงบรรพประวัติของตระกูลสองหลัก (จารขึ้นเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1508 และ 1577), จารึกหลุมฝังศพประมุขและบุคคลในตระกูลรุ่นต่าง ๆ จำนวนมาก และสมุดบันทึกแม่พิมพ์ไม้แสดงบรรพประวัติของตระกูล จัดทำขึ้นในรัชศกเต้ากวง ราชวงศ์ชิง เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1843. บทวิเคราะห์ยืนยันว่าบรรพชนตระกูลอาเป็นชาวเผ่า “ไป่อี๋” (ไต) มีความสัมพันธ์ทางสายเลือดใกล้ชิดกับตระกูลผู้นำชาวไตแห่งลุ่มแม่น้ำสาละวิน บรรพชนตระกูลอาแสดงบทบาทต่อเนื่องกันหลายร้อยปี ในเหตุการณ์เปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองต่าง ๆ ในมณฑลยูนนาน เริ่มตั้งแต่ปลายสมัยราชวงศ์หยวนจนถึงในต้นสมัยราชวงศ์ชิง ถึงแม้บรรพชนตระกูลอาจะได้ถูกดูดกลืนเข้าไปอยู่ในกระแสวัฒนธรรมจีนอย่างเข้มข้น หากสำนึกของความเป็น “ไต” ก็ยังคงดำรงอยู่ โดยไม่เป็นอิสระจากบริบททางการเมือง เห็นได้จากการที่ประมุขตระกูลอาในแทบจะทุกรุ่น พยายามรักษาสายสัมพันธ์กับประมุขชาวไตในหลายหัวเมืองแถบลุ่มแม่น้ำแดงและลุ่มแม่น้ำโขง ผ่านการสร้างระบบเครือญาติ ด้วยการแต่งงานข้ามระหว่างสายตระกูลผู้นำด้วยกันเอง.
