บทความชิ้นนี้มุ่งศึกษาเรื่องเอกลักษณ์ของชาติหรือความเป็นไทยในงานสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่ โดยใช้การประกวดแบบรัฐสภาแห่งใหม่เป็นกรณีศึกษาสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน การศึกษาพยายามทำความเข้าใจประวัติศาสตร์ของประเด็นเอกลักษณ์ของชาติในสถาปัตยกรรมเพื่อประโยชน์ต่อการเข้าใจสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน ซึ่งจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อแนวความคิดของสถาปนิกในอนาคต นอกจากนี้ททความนี้ยังมุ่งแสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัย       แวดล้อมอื่นๆ นอกจากแนวความคิดของสถาปนิกที่มีผลต่อการออกแบบ ผลของการวิเคราะห์ชี้ให้เห็นการแสดงออกถึงเอกลักษณ์ประจำชาติในสถาปัตยกรรมทั้งแบบที่ฉาบฉวยและลึกซึ้ง ความเหมือนและความเปลี่ยนแปลงของวิธีการแสดงออกในอดีตและปัจจุบัน รวมทั้งความยากและความสำคัญในการคิดสร้างสรรค์เอกลักษณ์ที่ร่วมสมัย

Abstract

Although architecture with national importance in Thailand has been required to achieve national identity (also known as Kwam Pen Thai, or “Thai-ness”) in its design, many architects have taken superficial approach to express the essence of Thai-ness into their designs. Using the New House of Parliament competition project as the case study this research analyses the current tendency of architectural design with regard to Thailland’s national identity. Underlying this issue is the development of the national identity issue in the architecture of Thailand from the 1910s to the present as well as the presence of other parties and factors, such as the political situations and public opinions, that have influenced the designers’ thoughts.  The analysis also details both the difficulty and the importance of re-inverting Thai-ness in architectural design.
