Abstract

This article focused on the architectural development of rowhouses in the Port Towns of the Andaman Sea and the Western Part of the Malay Peninsula: Ta Kua Pa, Phuket, Kan Tang in Thailand, and Georgetown in Penang Island, Malaysia. The study investigated the interaction between these port towns that gave rise to the creation of the rowhouses. The research asked how can these rowhouses be classified regarding building types, architectural forms and developments. The finding is that the architectural developments of rowhouses can be categorised into seven periods. The rowhouses' styles of each period reflected socioeconomic, cultural, technological and labour conditions under which they were created.
