บทความเรื่อง “อ่านใหม่-มองใหม่ : ปีการสถาปนาพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ อยุธยา” มุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาเอกสารทางประวัติศาสตร์ต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับอยุธยา เพื่อทราบสถานภาพความรู้ ชุดความคิด ตลอดจนคำอธิบายเกี่ยวกับวัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุอยุธยาที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบัน เพื่อนำไปสู่การตรวจสอบสมมติฐานที่มีอยู่เดิม และเสนอสมมติฐานใหม่ด้วยวิธีทางประวัติศาสตร์ และประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรม และการสำรวจรังวัดสภาพที่ปรากฏ และเปรียบเทียบกับสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีความสัมพันธ์กัน เพื่อนำไปสู่การเสนอสมมติฐานใหม่เกี่ยวกับการสถาปนาพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุอยุธยา

สถานภาพของข้อเสนอเกี่ยวกับการสถาปนาพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุอยุธยาในปัจจุบันมีสมมติฐานว่า พระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุอยุธยาสร้างขึ้นในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระบรมราชาธิราชที่ 1 (ขุนหลวงพระงั่ว) ใน พ.ศ. 1917 แต่จากการศึกษาเพิ่มเติมจากเอกสารประวัติศาสตร์ต่างๆ มีข้อสันนิษฐานว่า พระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุอยุธยาถูกสร้างขึ้นในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระราเมศวร ใน พ.ศ.1931 โดยสันนิษฐานว่าทรงได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุประจำเมืองลพบุรีที่พระองค์ทรงได้ไปปกครองก่อนหน้าที่จะกลับมาขึ้นครองราชสมบัติยังพระนครศรีอยุธยา

Abstract

“Re-Reading – Re-Thinking : New Hypothesis about year of Establishment of Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Ayutthaya” aims to study Ayutthaya historic account and focuses more on history of Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Ayutthaya so as to figure out the explanation about Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Ayutthaya at present. Integrated studies, in term of history and fieldworks on architectural survey of existing conditions are the main methods. The body of knowledge about the creation of the monastery along with the additional hypothesis will also be formed.
Due to the assumption that Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Ayutthaya was established in 1424, the reign of King Borommarajathiraj I (Khun Luang Phra Ngua), this study has figured out the possibility that Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Ayutthaya could have been built during the reign of King Ramesuan in 1438, and was inspired by Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Lopburi, where he had governed. The concept of constructing the Prang (Principle Stupa) was applied to Ayutthaya. Hence, another hypothesis was proposed.
