การผังเมืองของประเทศไทยมีความเป็นมายาวนานพร้อมๆ กับการก่อร่างสร้างเมืองตั้งแต่อดีตกาลจนถึงปัจจุบัน  บทความนี้จะกล่าวถึงวิวัฒนาการบทบาทและการดำเนินงานของการผังเมือง โดยเฉพาะที่มีการจัดทำโครงการหรือมติต่างๆ อย่างเป็นทางการ รวมไปถึงการชี้นำและคลี่คลายประเด็นของการผังเมืองประเทศไทย การทำงานทางด้านการวางแผนพัฒนาพื้นที่ ตลอดจนประเด็นที่มีการพิจารณาจัดวางผังในทิศทางที่แตกต่างกัน อันเนื่องมาจากความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสถานการณ์ต่างๆ มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับการพัฒนาเมืองทั้งสิ้น โดยเฉพาะในกรณีของประเทศไทยที่บ่อยครั้งเกิดความพยายามในการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง ทำให้รูปแบบการพัฒนาเมืองนั้นขาดเสถียรภาพ การดำเนินงานทางด้านการผังเมืองของประเทศไทยจึงมีวิวัฒนาการที่เอื้อต่อการแก้ไขสถานการณ์อย่างเป็นเหตุเป็นผลจวบจนปัจจุบัน
