This study aimed to examine the knowledge, understanding, and behavior related to traffic violation of high school students and to propose approaches for promoting the understanding of and obedience to traffic laws for high school students in Khon Kaen Municipality. The research employed a survey research design with a sample of 405 high school students. The data collected from questionnaires and interviews were analyzed using Pearson correlation. Qualitative data were also collected via group discussions with teachers, administrators, and police officers, a total of 20 persons.
The study results reveal that high school students lack the knowledge and understanding of traffic signs at a severe level because they do not have experiences in using public roads and a lack of driving proficiency. Students who have driving license have a higher level of knowledge and understanding than those who do not. These are considered personal factors which are risky to cause accidents. The solutions to prevent traffic are as follows: 1) dissemination of knowledge and understanding of traffic signs; 2) participation from members of the governance network, including governmental offices, businesses, communities, and parents, and 3) stricter enforcement of the traffic rules.
