Abstract

This study aims to examine community waste management problems in Chai Badan District, Lopburi Province, and to enhance local capacities through participatory training on waste separation, composting, and value-added waste utilization. Employing a participatory action research (PAR) approach, the project engaged 150 residents and 20 community leaders from three subdistricts. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, questionnaires, observations, and focus group discussions using a dialogic method. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) were used to analyze the data. Key challenges identified included increasing waste volumes, insufficient trash bins, improper disposal behaviors, low community cooperation in maintaining cleanliness, and limited waste treatment infrastructure. A high volume of plastic bottles and bags was found across the study area. The training program resulted in high overall satisfaction among participants, with the training process receiving the highest ratings, followed by the application of knowledge and knowledge gained. Participants successfully applied the knowledge in practice and developed community-led innovations. In Na Som Subdistrict, residents created brooms from plastic bottles for household use and commercial sale. In Sila Thip Subdistrict, participants crafted coasters and plant pots from plastic bottles and established a waste bank group to support community welfare. In Nikhom Lam Narai Subdistrict, residents made plant pots from reused tires and plastic bottles, used compost to enrich soil, and promoted food sharing within the community. These outcomes reflect enhanced local sustainability through grassroots waste management innovations.
