Guidelines for Developing Post-Harvest Management of Local Durian Products in Rayong Province
Keywords:
post-harvest management, durian, Rayong ProvinceAbstract
Durian cultivation has increased among farmers in Rayong Province, necessitating preparations for future production growth. This study aims to: (1) explore approaches for the development of post-harvest durian management, (2) analyze the economic, social, and environmental impacts of current practices, and (3) propose strategic guidelines to improve post-harvest management in local communities. Using a qualitative research methodology, the study engaged 15 key informants—including farmers, government officials, representatives of local administrative organizations, and durian entrepreneurs—through interviews, focus group discussions, and stakeholder consultations. The findings highlight several key components of effective post-harvest management: the establishment of cold storage facilities and central markets, the adoption of new technologies and innovations, and capacity building for farmers. Economically, improved post-harvest management helps increase farmer income and reduce production costs. Socially, it fosters stronger collaboration among producers. However, environmental concerns remain, particularly related to solid waste and wastewater. The study recommends an integrated, multi-stakeholder approach to promote Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) standards, enhance water resource management, and establish year-round storage systems. Additionally, investment in durian processing and off-season production can further enhance value creation and expand access to both domestic and international markets.
