บทคัดย่อ

บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์คือศึกษา “ความโง่” และ “ความขี้เกียจ” ที่ผลิตขึ้นโดยชนชั้นนำไทยเพื่อใช้อธิบายปัญหาความยากจนของผู้คนในชนบทของประเทศ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นมาจากการปะทะของแนวคิดแบบอเมริกัน และวัฒนธรรมจีน โดยอาศัยกรอบคิดวาทกรรมเป็นพื้นฐานในการอธิบาย ผลการศึกษาพบว่า วาทกรรมความโง่จากการไร้การศึกษาของคนชนบท อันเป็นต้นตอของปัญหาความยากจนที่ถูกผลิตขึ้นโดยชนชั้นนำไทย ด้านหนึ่งเป็นผลสืบเนื่องมาอิทธิพลทางคิดเกี่ยวกับการพัฒนาไปสู่ความทันสมัยของสหรัฐอเมริกาในยุคสงครามเย็น อีกด้านหนึ่งก็เป็นผลมาจากความใส่ใจในด้านการศึกษาของชาวจีนในประเทศไทยที่นำมาซึ่งความสำเร็จทางธุรกิจของตนเองและครอบครัว ขณะเดียวกัน ความโง่จากการไร้การศึกษายังถูกชนชั้นนำไทยเชื่อมโยงกับปัญหาการไม่ยอมรับเทคโนโลยีการผลิตสมัยใหม่ ตลอดจนการแทรกซึมของคอมมิวนิสต์ในพื้นที่ชนบทควบคู่ไปด้วย ส่วนวาทกรรมความขี้เกียจของคนชนบท อันเป็นนิสัยอันไม่พึงประสงค์ต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ เกิดขึ้นจากการรับรู้ของชนชั้นนำไทยต่อวัฒนธรรมความขยันหมั่นเพียรในการประกอบอาชีพของชาวจีน ซึ่งทำให้พวกเขามีความมั่งคั่งร่ำรวย มากพอ ๆ กับการยอมรับความสำเร็จของอเมริกาจากความเพียรพยายามของชาวอเมริกัน
