การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์การเมือง เศรษฐกิจและสังคมสมัยธนบุรี พ.ศ. 2310 – 2325 2) ศึกษาคติความเชื่อของผู้คนในสมัยธนบุรี พ.ศ. 2310 – 2325 3) ศึกษาการผสมผสานทางวัฒนธรรมและคติความเชื่อในสมัยธนบุรี พ.ศ. 2310 – 2325 โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยทางประวัติศาสตร์
ผลการศึกษาพบว่า
- ในเรื่องการเมืองการปกครอง สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงสถาปนาเมืองธนบุรีเป็นศุนย์กลางแห่งใหม่ สืบเนื่องจากยุทธศาสตร์ของเมืองนั้นตั้งอยู่ใกล้ปากอ่าวไทยและแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ทำให้ข้าศึกไม่สามารถรุกรานทางบกจำต้องบุกทางน้ำแทน และเป็นเมืองป้อมปราการขนาดย่อมเหมาะสมต่อกำลังพลในการป้องกันเมือง จากนั้นสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงปราบปรามเจ้าชุมนุมตั้งแต่เมืองพิษณุโลก นครราชสีมาหรือพิมาย นครศรีธรรมราช และเมืองฝาง และจัดระเบียบการปกครองหัวเมือง ในเรื่องเศรษฐกิจ สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงริเริ่มฟื้นฟูการทำเกษตรกรรม การจัดเก็บภาษีอากร การประมูลขุดทรัพย์สมบัติ การจัดสรรตลาดการค้าทั้งทางบกและทางน้ำ และการดำเนินการค้าระบบบรรณาการ ในเรื่องสังคม โครงสร้างทางสังคมธนบุรีประกอบด้วย พระมหากษัตริย์ พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ขุนนาง ไพร่ และทาส มีการควบคุมกำลังคนและผู้คนมีความหลากหลายทั้งกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์แรงงาน พ่อค้า ข้าราชการตลอดจนทหารรับจ้าง ส่งผลให้สังคมสมัยธนบุรีเป็นสังคมแบบนานาชาติ
- คติความเชื่อของผู้คนในสมัยธนบุรีสามารถศึกษาได้สี่ประเด็น คือ คติความเชื่อเรื่องผี คือ ความเชื่อเรื่องผีภูมิสถาน คติความเชื่อศาสนาพรามหณ์-ฮินดู คือ ความเชื่อในเรื่องอำนาจของเทพเจ้า และความเชื่อเรื่องต่อพิสูจน์ คติความเชื่อศาสนาพุทธ คือ ความเชื่อเรื่องนรก-สวรรค์ ความเชื่อเรื่องเทพารักษ์ ความเชื่อเรื่องอุบาทว์ พระเพลิง คติความเชื่อเรื่องบุญ คติความเชื่อเรื่องพระโพธิสัตว์ ความเชื่อเรื่องพุทธบูชา และความเชื่อเรื่องหลักของพระนครฝ่ายพุทธจักร และคติความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับชาวบ้าน คือ คติความเชื่อเรื่องธรรมในการครองเรือนของสตรี
- การผสมผสานทางวัฒนธรรมและคติความเชื่อในสมัยธนบุรี พ.ศ. 2310 – 2325 ได้แก่ การผสมผสานความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีในฐานะพระโพธิ์สัตว์ซึ่งทำหน้าที่แก้ไขปัญหาสังคม การประดิษฐานพุทธศาสนาให้มั่นคง รวมทั้งเป้าหมายที่ต้องการนำเสนอให้นำอาณาประชาราษฎรข้ามสังสารวัฏ การผสมผสานความเชื่อทางศาสนาระหว่างเปรต เป็นความเชื่อของศาสนาดั้งเดิม คือ ผี เทวดาในสวรรค์ชั้นต่างๆเป็นความเชื่อของศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู ส่วนมหานครนิพพานเป็นความเชื่อของศาสนาพุทธ ดังปรากฎหลักฐานในสมุดภาพไตรภูมิซึ่งเป็นเครื่องมือหนึ่งในการควบคุมพฤติกรรมของผู้คนในสมัยธนบุรีให้อยู่ในศีลในธรรมเพื่อสร้างความสงบสุข และการผสมผสานความเชื่อทางศิลปกรรม คือ เจดีย์ทรงเครื่องสององค์และเจดีย์ทรงปรางค์ในพื้นที่เมืองธนบุรีและพระราชวังกรุงธนบุรี
