Abstract

This article is part of the doctoral dissertation in Thai Dance, Department of Dance, Chulalongkorn University. The purpose of this study is to focus on the evolution of comics appearing in the history of Thai performances. The results show that the comics have been in existence since the ancient times and have been inherited by transferring the knowledge from generation to generation. The comics can be compared as one of the performance institutes which is based on local tradition. At present, the comics have become a major device to drive business, especially in entertainment media. Regarding the evolution of comics in the history of Thai performances, comics are clearly the output of the entertaining tradition that can adapt itself to be compatible with social contexts, which are also relevant to the demand of the people in each period. Therefore, humor is an important character of Thai people. They can tactfully create humor through various types of shows, which are thought-out ideas leased local identity. Moreover, the comics are the art and wisdom which can properly reflect the nature of Thai people and society in each period.
