Abstract

This research aims to study the use of words and communication of meaning in online news headlines from www.thairath.co.th and www.khaosod.co.th published during 1st January to 31st March 2019. The results of the study showed that most reporters used words with connotative meanings to induce readers to follow the news content. Words used could be divided into two main groups. The first group of words with well-known connotative meaning which account for 28 percent, contains two subgroups: 1. words with changed meaning accounting for 71 percent; and 2. new words accounting for 29 percent. The second group of words with specific connotative meaning according to the context of news content or social context accounts for 72 percent from: 1. Reporters, 2. Sayings of quotes people, 3. Online social media, and 4. Specific group. This research shows that, in online society, newspaper media is both leader and follower of language usage at the same time. They are influential media that directs language usage of the society.
