An Analysis of Problems in the Translation Process Considering the German Short Story “Abschied von Berlin"

Abstract

This article is a summary from a translation analysis on the German short story “Abschied von Berlin" by Arno Geiger, which was translated into Thai in 2008. Based on the interpretative theoretical approach of Seleskovitch and Nord's model for translation oriented text analysis (1991), it suggests an analysis of text both from external and internal determinants. The main purpose of this study is to understand the original text properly, to be able to confer its meanings correctly to maintain the authentic beautiful wording and the unique writing style as much as possible. The article also presents problems which occurred during the translation process. At the same time, it helps to solve the problems in translation on selected examples; namely culture oriented idioms, proper names and dialogues.
