Abstract
The study “Collocation and Sematic Prosody of /kr:t/ in Thai: A Corpus Linguistic Study” has 2 main purposes. They are: 1.to determine the collocation and sematic prosody of the verb /kr:t/and 2.to determine the collocation and semantic prosody of … among difference registers or genres.
The data used was divided into two groups. The first corpus was collected from the news and articles on “Thairath” and “Matichon” newspaper published from October 8th-18th, 2006 and accessed through their websites. The second was randomized from the “Thai Concordance Online”, which contains a large register-diversified corpus of Thai. The program “Thai Concordance” was employed as a major tool search for the keyword from various contexts in the corpus and was manually tagged.
The research result show that, the verb /kr:t/ can collocate with lexical items in all the negative, neutral and positive semantic categories. However, the verb /kr:t/ was mostly found to have negative prosody which corresponded to the word’s occurrences found in the “Thai Concordance Online”.
When comparing the collocation and semantic prosody of /kr:t/ among different registers, it reveals that verb /kr:t/ had negative prosody across the registers, except for the speech of the former Prime Minister “Thaksin Shinawatra” of which the word was found to be positive. Consequently, it reflects that a semantic prosody condition can be violated to achieve some communicative purposes such as in persuasive speech. Moreover, it is found that the types of semantic prosody in which the word occurred, either negative, neutral, or positive depended also upon the genres and purposes of language use.
