Abstract
This research studies and compares figurative meanings of animals including figurative meaning procedures in Thai and Indonesian. Thai language data were collected from Thai National Corpus and 31 books on Thai proverbs and idioms. Indonesian language data were collected from SEALang Library Indonesian Corpus and 32 books on Indonesian proverbs and idioms. There are 270 examples in Thai, and 287 examples in Indonesian, totaling 557 examples of figurative meanings of animals in Thai and Indonesian. With regards to animal categorizations, 7 groups of animals were discerned which are: terrestrial, aquatic, poultries, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and myth. The results of this study indicated that there are similarities and differences of the figurative meanings of animals in both Thai and Indonesian are caused by the influences of each languages’ culture
