Abstract

                 This paper analyzed phonetic phenomena in the Thai poetic travelogue ‘Niraat London’, which was written by Mom Rachothai in the early period of Bangkok, and explained the relations between those phonetic phenomenon and contents of the texts. The results indicate that phonetic principles affected the meanings of context with regards to words in each text including: sound symbolism, onomatopoeia, sound change, and variant-related pronunciation. These kinds of sounds were in accordance with content. Although some linguists claimed that sound making meanings were arbitrarily dependant on an agreement in society, the sounds found in this literature were so unique that they presented the relationships between sounds and messages/stories interpretatively and meaningfully. The related sounds could construe meanings reflecting the state of emotion and perception. Visual sound could make readers see the motions of pictures of actions vividly which had emerged phonetically. Among the change, sounds were seen clearly and systematically which suggests that this Thai poetic travelogue concentrated on the sound and its circumstance which were changed and changeable. However, the linguistic changes discerned were both to be internal and external factors which could be transformed into another variant of the word which had sound change. The previous explanation of sound change established more conditions of emotive and attributive meanings in the texts.
