Development of Using English for Spreading Buddhism in the Age of Globalization

Abstract

The research examines the development of using English for spreading Buddhism in the age of globalization. Now the monks and the novices must develop the skill of English communication because there are the foreigners interesting Thai temples and the Thai government gives the policy for all temples organizing to be the cultural tourist places. The guides who understand the Buddhism best are the monks and the novices living in the temples. The objectives of the research are 1) to develop instructional manual of English for the monks and novices 2) to develop cultural English communication skill for the monks and novices 3) to develop English media model for monks and novices and 4) to analyze problems and obstacles and satisfaction of using English communicational skill for spreading Buddhism. This study is the Mixed Methods Research such as documentary research, quantitative research, qualitative research and action research using data collecting and analyzing by the monks living in 25 temples. The population in the study are 320 people. The results of the research were found that 1)  the result of developing of instructional manual of English for the monks and novices is found that the agreement of monks and novices is average at 4.39 which is at high level, participating of developing instructional manual of English for the monks and novices is average at 4.39 which is at high level, comparing effectiveness of learning, pre-testing of instructional manual of English for the monks and novices and after using of instructional manual of English for the monks and novices is found that monks and novices in  the General Education Section of PhraPariyattidhamma Schools  have the result of per-testing and post-test of using  instructional manual of English for the monks and novices in statistically significant at the 0.05 level. 2) The result of developing cultural English communication skill for the monks and novices is found that there are 179 (71.6%) monks and the novices wanting to use English communication for cultural tourism and there are 71 (28.4%) monks and novices no need to use English communication for cultural tourism. The comparation pre-test and post-test of training the monks and the novices who are studying at the high school in the General Education Section of PhraPariyattidhamma Schools are found that the monks and the novices who study at the high school in the General Education Section of PhraPariyattidhamma Schools getting the result of pre-test and post-test of training are different statistically significant at the 0.05 level. The process of developing English communication using skill of cultural tourism of the monks and the novices who live in the tourist places in Chiang Mai is found that the agreement of all monks and novices in the average at 4.29 which is at the high level. 3) The result of developing English media model for monks and novices is found that the agreement of monks and novices in the average at 4.29 which is at the high level. The achievement of English learning and teaching media for the monks and the novices and the comparation of pre-test and post-test of using English learning and teaching media of the monks and the novices in the General Education Section of PhraPariyattidhamma Schools are different statistically significant at the 0.05 level. 4) The result of analyzing of the problems and obstacles and satisfaction of using English communicational skill for spreading Buddhism is found that the problems and the obstacles are (1) no time for practicing speaking English (2) felling shy and no dare to pronounce like foreigner (3) no how to speak (4) no understand grammar and (5) no speak continuously and forget of speaking. The satisfaction of using English communicational skill for spreading Buddhism is found that the monks and the novice are satisfied in the average at 4.40 which is at the high level and satisfaction of using English learning and teaching for monks and novices is found that satisfaction of monks and novices is in the average at 4.44 which is at the high level.
