The Development of Mathematical Problem Solving and Communication Ability of Mathayomsuksa One Students on One Variable Linear Equation by Using FOPS Strategy

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to study the characteristics of learning activities organized according to FOPS strategy for learning development in mathematical problem solving and communication ability on one variable linear equation of mathayomsuksa one students, and 2) to study mathematical problem solving and communication ability of mathayomsuksa one students on one variable linear equation of learning activities organized according to FOPS strategy. The sample of this research consisted of 30 mathayomsuksa one students of one classroom who were studying in the second semester of the academic year 2022, that was selected by cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this research were 1) 8 mathematics lesson plans on one variable linear equation by using FOPS strategy and 2) mathematical problem solving and communication ability test which was a subjective test asking students to elaborate on how to solve the mathematical problem in detail for 4 items. The data were analyzed in terms of percentage, mean, standard deviation, t – test statistics, and content analysis.

The results of the research were as follows: 1) characteristics of learning activities organized according to FOPS strategy were consisted of 4 steps: (1) F – Find the problem type, (2) O – Organize the information in the problem using the diagram, (3) P – Plan to solve the problem, and (4) S – Solve the problem and 2) students had mathematical problems solving and communication ability on one variable linear equation after receiving the learning management based on FOPS strategy were higher than 60% at the .05 level of significance.
