Abstract

Argumentation is a reflection of students' ability to express their opinions, engage in reasoned arguments, and make logical conclusions. They can effectively communicate mathematical concepts, but currently, students are unable to explain problem-solving strategies or mathematical arguments to others. The objective of this research is to enhance students' ability to engage in mathematical argumentation on geometric sequences and series of mathayomsuksa 5 students through learning management based on open approach in a large specialized high school in Bangkok, with a total of 40 participants. The research adopts a practical action research PAOR in two experimental cycles. The research tools used in this research were lesson plans, worksheets, mathematical argumentation ability test, and interview recordings. Data analysis includes mean, median, standard deviation, and percentages. The research findings indicate that the majority of students possess intermediate-level abilities in mathematical argumentation. Students are able to provide claims and supporting reasons fairly well, but providing opposing evidence and counterarguments is incomplete. Approximately 75% of the students fall into the intermediate level or higher. Therefore, the suggested approach for enhancing mathematical argumentation ability through open-ended learning includes selecting problem situations with various problem-solving methods that are close to students' experiences, creating consecutive testing formats to find answers, and creating a stimulating atmosphere that encourages students to think and express their opinions.
