English Transliterated Words Appeared in Vogue Thailand Magazine

Abstract

This research aims to analyze 453 English words in Vogue Thailand Journal  September 2016. Data were analyzed to perceive aspects of writing English transliterated words according to the principles of English word transliteration of the Royal Institute in specified issues.

The findings revealed that characteristics of English transliterated words ranked in order included (1) English transliterated words that were corrected in accordance with the principles of English word transliteration of the Royal Institute but did not appear in the Dictionary of the Royal Institute B.E. 2554. They were correctly transliterated according to the principles of vowel transcription, consonant transcription, mark use and tone mark use for 292 words accounted for 64.46%. (2) It was the group of English transliterated words that were not correct as per the principles of English word transliteration of the Royal Institute for 97 words or equal to 21.41%. The result showed that the transliterated words were mostly written incorrectly according to the principles of tone mark use for 58 words or 59.80%. (3) The English transliterated words found in the dictionary of the Royal Institute B.E. 2554 included 64 words which accounted for 14.13%. The research findings indicated that tone mark use was the greatest problem of transliteration.
