Integrating the Buddhist Principle of Samma Ajivo (Right Livelihood) with Airline Operations for Maximum Safety

Abstract

This article examines the application of Samma Ajivo (Right Livelihood) in Theravada Buddhism to operations within the aviation industry, specifically focusing on roles related to operations and maintenance, to achieve the highest level of safety. Airline work carries high responsibility for lives and property; even minor errors can lead to severe consequences. Therefore, fostering a safety consciousness is paramount. Samma Ajivo, which emphasizes honesty, responsibility, diligence, and heedfulness, serves as a fundamental basis for strengthening professional ethics and pride. The article presents approaches to integrating Samma Ajivo across various dimensions, including cultivating a "safety first" mindset, building a transparent organizational culture (Just Culture), adhering to standards (SOPs), continuous self-development, and exercising heedfulness in every detail. This analysis indicates that applying these principles will enhance trust, peace of mind, and ultimately, maximum safety in air travel, which is the true core of aviation operations.
