Abstract

There are a variety of economic crops grown around Thailand. However, after harvesting; burning its residue is one main cause to environmental damage. This research was conducted to explore the how public participation can be best implement. This research focuses on the residue in Maha Sarakham province which is located in the northeast of Thailand. The research employed qualitative method with structured interview.

The research revealed that people those who are involved with awareness-raising campaign for residue burning, they are voluntary and are very keen to collaborate and participate with the stop residue burning scheme. These people are very keen to participate with the campaign throughout the process ranging from the beginning; making decision; planning; to working in collaboration with the government. In contrast, people those who are not involved with the awareness-raising campaign for residue burning, they are voluntary and are very keen to collaborate and participate with the stop residue burning scheme. These people are not ready to stop burning the residue from their farming practices and also they are not interested to participate with the stop residue burning scheme.

This research therefore emphasizes that, especially for people those who are not ready to stop burning the residue from their farming practices and also they are not interested to participate with the stop residue burning scheme, the government should launch the campaign to encourage people to work together, to share ideas and find solution that could work for awareness raising and enhancing effective public participation for a sound agricultural residue management.
