Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: The short documentary “Korat Rock Salt: Local Wisdom and Change” is part of the research project “Cultural Adaptation of Korat Rock Salt.” Objective: The study aims to portray traditional wisdom in salt boiling practices and the cultural transformation surrounding rock salt in the Korat region through documentary storytelling. Methods: This is a qualitative research project conducted in five communities located in the Phimai and Non-Sung districts of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The study utilized purposive sampling and collected data through in-depth interviews with 11 key informants. Results: The research found that the short documentary adopts selective storytelling techniques to convey the narrative of perseverance and cultural preservation. It highlights the struggle of a few elderly villagers who are among the last households still practicing the traditional rock salt boiling method. These individuals are deeply committed to passing on their way of life, despite facing physical decline due to age. The documentary also captures the ideological tension between the older generation, who place high value on cultural heritage and local wisdom, and the younger generation, who often view such practices as outdated and burdensome. Conclusion: The documentary invites viewers to reflect on whether traditional rock salt practices should be preserved or allowed to fade away in the face of modernization and cultural change.
