บทความนี้ถกประเด็นเรื่องผีในอุษาคเนย์ โดยสอบทวนนิยาม ความหมายของความเชื่อและศาสนา และการรับรู้เกี่ยวกับผีเชิงสังคมวัฒนธรรมในอุษาคเนย์ เพื่ออธิบายเชื่อมโยมความเชื่อเรื่องผี ระบบความสัมพันธ์เชิงซ้อน และการก่อรูปของเรือนพื้นถิ่นที่สร้างอัตลักษณ์อุษาคเนย์ การก่อรูปของเรือนอุษาคเนย์เป็นความสัมพันธ์สองทางระหว่างความเชื่อกับสถาปัตยกรรม กล่าวคือ ความเชื่อมีส่วนสำคัญในการก่อรูปสถาปัตยกรรม ในขณะที่สถาปัตยกรรมทำหน้าที่สื่อสารความเชื่อของมนุษย์ การดำรงอยู่ของความเชื่อเรื่องผีอย่างเข้าใจ จึงมีผลอย่างยิ่งต่อการดำรงอยู่และเปลี่ยนแปลงของอัตลักษณ์พื้นถิ่นอุษาคเนย์ด้วย

Abstract

This paper discusses the spiritual beliefs in Usakane or Southeast Asia. It reviews the definition and meaning of belief and religion as well as the perception on spirits in Usakane in order to explain the linkages between spiritual beliefs, relative systems and formation of vernacular architecture in Usakane. The formation of Usakane houses came from a two-way relation between belief and architecture, that is, beliefs generate forms whilst forms communicate beliefs. Therefore, the continuity of spiritual belief affects directly the continuity and change of Usakane’s vernacular identity.
