Applying Buddhist Principles to Solve the Problem of Rape in Thai Society

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate and analyze issues of rape in Thai society, its causes and factors related and applying Buddhist principles to cope with the problem of rape. The study found that rape has severe costs, has tended to increase in violence, and has contributed to a crisis in Thai society. In terms of the causes and effects of rape, it was found that significant factors thought to lead to rape incidents include environmental factors, factors that create opportunities for rape to occur, self-indulgence in society, a lack of morality, factors relating to sexual attitudes, deterioration of efforts to prevent or suppress crimes related to rape, victim behaviors, and psychological abnormalities of the rapist. The application of Buddhist principles to solve issues of rape in Thai society applicable to potential perpetrators and incidents of rape are the Five Precepts, mindfulness, conscience, shame and fear of sin. Potential rape victims, on the other hand, must apply the Buddhist principle of non-carelessness.
